Introduction to Injection Molding Machines

Injection Molding Machines are widely used for making plastic parts of various shapes. These machines mainly consist of two main parts, namely, an injection unit, and a clamping unit. Injection molding machines can fasten the molds in either a horizontal or vertical position. In most cases, the machines are horizontally oriented. Vertical machines are only used in some niche applications, for example, insert molding. The vertical position allows the machine to take advantage of gravity. There are many ways to fasten the tools to the platens. The most commonly seen would be manual clamps of which both halves are bolted to the platens. In addition, hydraulic clamps (chocks are used to hold the tool in place) and magnetic clamps are also used. The magnetic and hydraulic clamps are used where fast tool changes are required.
