[Emergency Lights]
The purpose of emergency lights are to guide people to safety in emergency situation such as fire or failure of power. Emergency lights provide clear visibility in buildings or indoor places with a sufficient high level of light to help find the nearest exit and quick access to fire extinguishers or other safety equipment in the shortest time.
In most countries, emergency lights are compulsory in many place such as official buildings, schools ,workplaces, residential apartments, and several high occupancy commercial venues in conjunction with exit signs. Normally emergency lights are installed above exit signs, as well on the wall, in corridor, stairway intersections or at basement where are usually relaying on light devices.
In event of fire or power failure occurs , emergency lights will automatic turn on at once. Similarly with exit lights, under normal circumstances emergency lights sit dormant and lit by main power with battery in a charge status ; when electricity fails, battery will discharge and provides power for emergency lights to remain lightening until main power returns or exhaustion of battery. Once electricity restored, most emergency light batteries shut off and resume recharging.


[Batteries of Emergency Lights]
There are several ways of illumination including incandescent, fluorescent and LED applied in emergency lights. During power outage, emergency lights are generated by backup batteries which use simple transistor or relay technology to switch on.
The original backup battery was huge in earlier days; while modern emergency lights applied new technology that reduced the requirement of voltage and the size of battery also dropped. Nowadays the battery fits quite well in the base of fixture, and the emergency lights themselves are almost as large as the bulbs.
Lead-calcium batteries are used in emergency lights, they are designed to be long lasting normally up to 10 years of use or more on continuous charge, and are approximately lasting for a minimum of 90 minutes each time.


[Types of Emergency Lights System ]
Emergency lights are generally fall into the following categories: non-maintained , maintained, and sustained.
- Non-maintained Emergency Lights
Illumination will only occur in the event of blackout for non-maintained emergency lights.
- Maintained Emergency Lights
Maintained emergency lights are illuminated permanently using the same lamp under both
emergency and normal circumstances.
- Sustained Emergency Lights
Sustained emergency lights are substantially a non-maintained system with additional main lamps
(two lamps or two sets of lamps) added. One lamp is lit on main 240V AC supply, and the other is
activated by backup battery when failure of power occurs.
