Exit signs are one kind of safety devices that displays where emergency exit are. Exit signs are usually found in public places such as hospitals, malls, libraries, as well as private places, for
example buildings and apartments.
The purpose of exit signs is to guide people to the nearest exit when fire or other emergency occur. In case of reduced visibility due to smoke or black out, exit signs are often illuminated permanently.

There are many different forms of exit signs that mostly are in pictogram form with or without text. The English word "EXIT" are adhered in many countries or similarly in other languages.
Exit signs are originally made of metal and lit by a incandescent light bulb, or covered by glass which fit directly over a single-bulb light fixture. However the fixtures are small and dim that exit signs become hard to spot in fire due to smoke, and this kind of design of exit signs are only useful when power still remains on. Unfortunately, it is very likely to have power outage in fire.
In that case, a dual-power system was adopted to address this problem. Exit signs was lit by main power under normal conditions and battery was in a charge states simultaneously. Should the failure of electric supply occurs, battery will discharge and enable the exit signs to remain lighting until the
main power return or when battery runs out of sufficient power to support the exit signs.
Many light technology of exit signs are applied in modern installations such as LED, fluorescent, phosphorescence and radio luminescence.


[Fluorescent Exit Signs]
Fluorescent bulb is widely used in many exit signs, it works in the same way as incandescent bulbs but even brighter and less electricity consumed. Moreover some incandescent bulbs resemble flashlight bulbs, it uses even less power of which only few watts was counted. In the event of fire or power outrage, fluorescent performs well of its both side backlighting of an exit fixture; the clear visibility in a dim environment; as well as longer lasting of lighting owing to less battery power consumption.
Considering the cost of electricity, maintenance and the bulb itself, some exit signs are designed to combine both formats of applications. There is a primary bulb of fluorescent which is high voltage; and a second set of the lower voltage incandescent bulb which will illuminate in the event of power failure.
