Safety Gear Can Save Lives on The Slopes
Apr 1, 2009
We all know that skiing and snowboarding are dangerous. In fact, every season, ski patrol at resorts around the state treat a wide range of injuries. There have even been instances where a person was killed in an accident on the slopes.
Last month, actress Natasha Richardson died after she fell on a beginner run and hit her head. At first, the actress appeared to be okay, even laughing about the incident. However, her condition quickly deteriorated and she died shortly after the accident.
News of this tragedy has emergency officials urging everyone to wear a helmet. "Head injuries are pretty common, especially with harder snow conditions," said Dean Cardinale, a member of the ski patrol at Snowbird. "When it doesn’t snow for awhile, we have melt freeze type situations where the snowpack gets real hard."
Parents also need to talk to their children about the importance of wearing safety gear, such as helmets, elbow and knee pads, to prevent injuries that can occur on the mountain. “You don’t have to be going really fast. We see injuries from the plaza deck to the top of the mountain,” said Cardinale.
However, Dean says safety gear can give skiers and snowboarders a false sense of security. That’s why, he says, you also need to remind your kids about the rules of the mountain.
