Description of Design and History:
This exqusite rug is probably dated back to the 1880s. It shows no sign of synthetic colours, and its design combines wonderfully intricate interior working with a precisely symmetrical organazation that is indictive of settled East Caucasian, weaving prior to the degeneration of craftsmanship that began in the last years of the 19th century.
This interesting piece is wonderfully vibrant in colour with the rich green and blue of the the field, this somewhat interesting transition of the colour of the field, whether it is of accidental achievement we are not certian, but it causes a unique backdrop for the five medallions which are encompassed by minor ornamentation of flying birds, dragons and almonds , accentuates rather than disturbs the eloquent design.
Rosettes such as the ones in the medallions are placed through the field, certainly adding the lovely and highly graphic design to this carpet. The feeling for the proporation is most apparent in the narrow border, with the beautifully drawn reciprocal of the white-ground outer border being intensified in impact through the scale of the border as a whole complementing rather than competing with the balanced statement of the field pattern. Indeed a lovely piece for your collection.
