Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a chemical compound of silicon and carbon, but it also occurs in nature. Silicon carbide has forms extremely hard, dark, iridescent crystals that are insoluble in water and other common solvents. Virtually silicon carbide exists in at least 70 crystalline forms. Purer silicon carbide can be made by the more expensive process of chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The earliest examples of silicon carbide was found in the late-1800s by E.G. Acheson. The earliest studies of silicon carbide was made by Henri Moissan.
Silicon carbide does not melt at any known pressure. Silicon carbide has a specific gravity of 3.2, and its high sublimation temperature (approximately 2700 ^¢XC) makes it useful for bearings and furnace parts. Due to its properties, silicon carbide is used for blue LEDs, ultrafast, high-voltage Schottky diodes, MOSFETs and high temperature thyristors for high power switching.
