Descenders are designed for long double (rock climbing technique) or single rope (canyoneering or caving technique) descents. They help control a descent : at the beginning, when the rope's weight makes it run slowly through the device, to the end, when the rope slides much easier. The PIRANA and the RACK excel at this because the braking friction can be increased as one descends, helping control the speed.
