The Kaplan turbine is mostly suitable for hydropower stations with medium or high head. It can be divided into two types as fixed blade and rotating blade according to its structure. The fixed blade type is mainly used for small hydropower stations with medium and small capacity, small variation in load. While rotating blade type is mainly used for hydropower plant with medium and big capacity, big variation in load.
The Kaplan type turbines have a wide range from 3 to 65m in water head, 0.2 to 100MW in capacity and 1 to 7m in runner diameter.
