Class D audio amplifier uses pulse-width modulated (PWM) signals instead of typical class-AB audio amplifiers linear signal.
Audio Amplifier Class D’s PWM signal has audio signal and PWM switching frequency with harmonics. Compared with class-AB audio amplifier, the class-D audio amplifier is much more efficient due to the output MOSFET switch from high impedance to low impedance operating at nanoseconds in the active regions, resulting in very little power loss during the output stage. Additionally, the inductive element of the LC filter stores energy from cycle-to-cycle, ensuring that switching power is not lost in the speakers.
